How I got to #2 in Google within 24 hours
Well, well. What do you know?
This site got crawled by Googlebot within an hour of it going live, then went into Google’s main index within the day. No big deal, right. Yeah, what blew me away was that my introductory page ranked #2 for my name!
The following was what little I had done to achieve this:
- Set up my site pages and internal links accordingly
- Submitted my site to Google and Yahoo! Site Explorer
- Also to Yahoo! Directory and Dmoz
- Set up my Google Webmaster Tools account
- Updated my LinkedIn profile
- Stumble upon one of my pages once
- Dugged 2 of my postings
- Not forgetting that I have both Google and Yahoo! toolbars on my browser when I was playing around my site
Now, hold on. I know that some of you who knows SEO will say, “So what? It’s just his name. He’s no David Beckham, so he could be ranking for ‘world’s cutest guy‘ for all we care. The search volumes will probably be almost non-existent.”
You are mostly right about that last bit. Nobody but people who knows me (or atleast once knew me) could probably be the ones making that odd search for a certain “Nor Azam Ahmad“.
The thing is, this is not really about the query or the term being searched for. If anything, this exercise just goes to prove that given a proper execution of the basic SEO steps, there is no way that a site cannot start performing for any keyword space it wishes to compete in. We can conclude that Googlebot does not really need much to find your site, and then for the search engine to rank the pages it has placed in its index, for the relevant terms queried for.
I plan to watch my rankings in the next few days to see if there is really such a thing as a “Google reflux” (a term I am coining to describe the phenomenon of new sites losing rankings as quickly as they got them).
Stay tuned for an update.
Update:
This page apparently not only is holding steady its position so far, but it is also having top 10 rankings in Google for the following terms:
What’s even great is that this page also ranks well in Yahoo! too:
Something’s telling me this page is going to top the charts soon..
